THULA THULA WILDLIFE RESERVE – WHERE THE WILD SPEAKS TO THE HEART

In the heart of Zululand, just two hours from Durban, South Africa, Thula Thula Wildlife Reserve offers far more than a safari—it offers a connection. A quiet, powerful reconnection to nature, to wildlife, and ultimately, to ourselves. Here, the wild does not simply surround you—it reaches you.

“Thula Thula,” meaning peace and tranquillity in Zulu, reflects the spirit of this extraordinary sanctuary. Home to elephants, rhinos, cheetahs and many other species, the reserve stands as a place of protection and purpose, where every life matters and every effort is made to ensure the survival of those most at risk.

Founded in 1998 by Françoise and Lawrence Anthony, Thula Thula began as a modest 1,000-hectare reserve and has grown into a thriving 5,000-hectare wilderness. Its story has touched hearts across the world through three acclaimed books—THE ELEPHANT WHISPERER, AN ELEPHANT IN MY KITCHEN, and THE ELEPHANTS OF THULA THULA—each one a testament to the deep bond between humans and animals. At the heart of this experience is a remarkable story—the rescue of seven “problem elephants” in 1999. Once destined to be culled, they found refuge at Thula Thula. Through patience and trust, a relationship was built. Today, that small herd has grown into a thriving family, symbolising resilience, healing and coexistence.

In 2012, everything changed. Following the passing of Lawrence, Françoise was confronted almost immediately by the harsh reality of poaching when one of her rhinos was attacked. In that moment, grief became determination. Her path was clear: to protect, to fight, and to ensure that no life under her care would be lost without a battle.

Today, Thula Thula stands at the forefront of conservation. Expanded anti-poaching teams work tirelessly across the reserve, supported by advanced technology such as tracking collars that monitor elephants, rhinos and cheetahs around the clock. These unseen efforts form the foundation of every peaceful moment experienced by guests.

But what truly defines Thula Thula is the connection it creates.

Guests are welcomed into two unique worlds—the elegant Elephant Safari Lodge, known for its unique atmosphere, elegance and refined cuisine, and the Luxury Tented Camp, where the wild beauty of the bush is ever-present. Both offer something rare: an experience that feels personal, immersive and deeply moving.

Conservation on this scale requires ongoing support. While tourism sustains daily operations, the protection of endangered species depends heavily on donors. The South African Conservation Fund, created by Francoise in 2016,  ensures that this vital work continues, safeguarding the future of the reserve’s wildlife.

Education and community are equally central. The Thula Thula Volunteers Academy, launched by Francoise in 2018,  invites people from around the world to experience conservation firsthand—often leaving transformed.

At the same time, the reserve empowers local communities through employment, training and development, with many team members growing into leadership roles over the years.

Thula Thula is more than a destination—it is a sanctuary of hope, resilience and purpose. A place where the wild speaks softly to the heart, and where every visitor rarely leaves unchanged.
